Since ancient times, man has always been attracted by the idea of ​​​​creating an artificial being capable of thinking and acting like a person in the flesh. The expression “artificial intelligence” was born in 1956, on the occasion of a scientific conference at Darmouth College, New Hampshire. The major exponents of information technology of the time took part in this conference and contributions on the subject were collected, also discussing possible future developments.

Already in 1936 Alan Turing, considered the father of modern information technology, had laid the foundations of Artificial Intelligence with the Turing machine. Turing himself in 1950 published the article “Computing machinery and intelligence“, where he also introduced a system for verifying the degree of intelligence of a machine, now known as the Turing Test.

Those were the years in which this discipline was detaching itself from mathematics and should not be confused with computer science. At the beginning it was called in many ways, but then the term “artificial intelligence” was chosen.

Since then, Artificial Intelligence has made great strides, growing hand in hand with the computing power of computers and database technologies.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a branch of computer science whose purpose is to develop hardware and software systems endowed with typical capabilities of the human being such as interaction with the environment, learning, reasoning and planning and therefore the ability to make decisions independently.

This desire to create a machine with human capabilities also brings with it a thorny question: is Artificial Intelligence a threat or an opportunity?

On a moral level, it is right to ask yourself some doubts, but on a business level, Artificial Intelligence software certainly represents a great opportunity. Natural language processing is not the only feature of software and tools that use Artificial Intelligence, other capabilities consist of:

  • Image processing (such as face and motion recognition);
  • Learning (Machine Learning and Deep Learning);
  • Classification of information;
  • Capacity for social interaction and interaction with the environment (location, mapping of specific routes).

These properties make us understand how these software are able to achieve the required application purposes thanks to complex systems that do nothing but imitate human capabilities and enhance them.

There is no doubt that in the future we will have much more powerful tools based on Artificial Intelligence that will become part of our lives >daily and of our business. We must therefore start to become familiar with these tools to better understand them and not lose control over them.
